Week of Onsies

I meant to start this yesterday, but my sewing station was still dismantled until very late, so here we are today.  Last Saturday I went crazy in Mim's dresser, pulling out onsies I wanted to repurpose.  There are 4, plus I have another onsie project that's been in the works for awhile, and that's how onsie week came about.  Today, the bandana onsie.
(I decided to try my hand at a full blown tutorial for this- I figured it might be helpful to document my mistakes so I could refine my technique.)
The beginning (almost- I had already started to cut the bandana before I thought to take a picture).  This onsie was put on the chopping block because it was so short and squat.  By the time it wasn't falling off Mim's shoulders, it wasn't nearly long enough.  It will be reincarnated as a summer tunic top.
I cut off the top, just under the armpits.  I saved the bottom part to make a quick and easy diaper cover, though.
I cut the border off of two sides, then cut the bandana in half.
Then place right sides together and use a straight stitch so you have one big long piece with a border across the bottom.
I started with my narrow elastic in the middle and tacked it down, then worked from the middle out to both edges, pulling the elastic very tightly as I went.
When you're finished, it should look like this all across the top:
Pin your onsie like this.  You could also do right sides together, but I wanted the unfinished knit edge to be on top.  Sew all the way around with a zig zag again (I realized I could have probably sewed the onsie top, bandana and elastic together with just one pass, but I prefer to take it slow).  Almost done.  I added some flowers from the scraps of the bandana I cut off:

I started like this, then kept folding and crumpling as I went.  I got this:

I stitched it a couple of times so it would hold together, then attached it to the tunic with a button.  Voila!
I can't wait for Mim to wear this tomorrow!
** EDIT: There was a question in the comments from Shawna about the excess bandana irritating Mim.  I did trim off some excess, and then I washed it before she wore it, so it would fray and fuzz up a little bit.  (Not a dumb question at all, by the way)**

Probably a dumb question... But after you sewed the onesie to the bandana skirt, did you cut any of the bandana off the inside? It seems like it would be irritating to skin if left that way? I'm sorry I'm not getting it! haha! :)
